There is a growing recognition and appreciation of the importance of psychological wellness and the need to build diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, including the municipal workplace.

A workplace is considered diverse when it not only mirrors the society in which it operates but when its inclusion efforts also break down institutional bias around marginalized identities. Even though employers, including municipalities, have legislated responsibilities to protect specific groups from discrimination and harassment, there is still work to do in relation to psychological wellness and diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Creating a safe and inclusive workplace that respects “differences” is not only a legal requirement, it is necessary to be an Employer of Choice. What obligations do municipal employers have when it comes to employee psychological health and safety and creating an inclusive environment at work? What is workplace equity and what steps should municipal employers take to ensure that their current and future workplace is diverse, equitable, and inclusive? How have adjudicatoirs responded to these issues?

This presentation will provide some answers to these questions.

This session will be delivered by André Nowakowski of Miller Thomson.
